Are you an environmental activist or professional, or involved in a local environmental group? If so, there's a battle brewing in Washington, D.C., that you should know about.
Congress is debating President Obama's plan to solve the climate crisis and rebuild America's economy with millions of clean energy jobs. Unfortunately, during the inside-the-beltway negotiations, Big Oil and Coal industry lobbyists have weakened the energy bill significantly.
For instance, President Obama called for a clean energy standard requiring that 25% of our electricity come from clean sources by 2025. But the clean energy standard in this bill is so weak that it requires less clean energy than the Department of Energy says we'll get regardless.
The bill would also repeal the Obama administration's current authority under the Clean Air Act to crack down on dirty coal plants. As a result, the bill would help give the green light to a whole new generation of coal plants while allowing old and dirty plants to keep polluting.
We need to strengthen the energy bill. You can help.
MoveOn.org, working with a diverse coalition of groups including the Sierra Club, Environment America, Green for All, Acorn, Democracia Ahora, 1Sky, and others, sent a letter urging Congress to strengthen the energy bill. Click here to read our letter.
